          assume Baghdad was located in the continental USA at Detroit,
          Michigan.   Red Sea strikes at Bagbdad were launched from Little
          Rock, Arkansas, and Persian &ulf strikes from Richmond,
          Virgini a.

                We operated four -- yes, four -~ carriers inside the Persian

(         Gulf--adding their strike capability to that of the land based
          coalition air forces in Saudi Arabia, USAF units in Eastern

          Turkey and the two other carrier battlegroups stationed in the

          Red Sea.   This effectively surrounded Iraq with a strike capability

          from four pri;ncipal axes, and demonstrated the flexibility and

          firepower which naval forces bring to the battlefield.


                Critical to the success of naval aviation missions was the role
          of our electronic countermeasures or ??ja~~~~g?I aircraft. Our
