SUBJECT: Environmental Implications of a Massive Oil Spill and
Fire in the Persian Gulf
The attached report contains information for your use in
responding to requests for information on the potential
environmental impacts of massive oil spills and fires in the
Persian Gulf. The report was prepared by the National Oceanic
and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), in response to a request
from the National Response Team (NRT), with input from several
NRT member agencies, including the Department of Defense.
Secretary of Commerce Robert A. Mosbacher has reviewed the
report, and it has been provided to the Honorable John H. Sununu,
Chief of Staff to the President. The NRT Co-Chairs, Mr. James L.
Makris of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and Captain W.
F. Holt of~the U.S. Coast Guard, have requested that NRT members
make the report available immediately to their agency head,
Public Information Office, Congressional .liais~Qn-. Office, and
program offices, which I am hereby doing. w& haVe also provided
a copy to the DoD Crisis Coordination Center.
