THE PATIENT AS A SOURCE OF CONTAMINATION

                   4. Bot.ulinum is a toxin and therefore is unlikely to present a hazard to the

medical personnel treating the patients. This is not the case with anthrax

spores, once in the body, they shed their outer coating and the bacteria start
to divide. As a result all body fluids and especially blood in the later stages

of the disease, are a possible source of infection to medical staff. These

fluids should be disinfected with a 10% solution of Hypochlorite bleach.

Standard precautions, such as the wearing of gloves and mask must be followed.

It is unlikely that the pulmonary system of these patients will be a significant

source of anthrax.. The ventilator is not expected to become contaminated since

the patient's expired gases do not come into contact with it.

                   FACTORS TO BE CONSIDERED

                   S. Patients may have been taking pyridostigmine and this will prolong the

action of depolarising muscle relaxant such as suxamethonium.

                   6. Stress ulcers and autonomic system dysfunction will occur as a result of

                   the disease process.

                   RESUSCITATORS

                   7. The following resuscitators are available:

                        a. Ground Role Resuscitator (GRR). The GRR is capable of providing,
filtered air, ventilation for 10 patients from compressed air. Eight of

the patients are connected directly to the air compressor, a further two

are connected via a Brompton as-sistor-controller ventilator. The air is
