        SUBJECT: Prevention of Hepatitis A in Soldiers


        available in May 1991. (POC for negotiations with SKB: William

        3. Merck Sharp Dohme has also developed a formalin inactivated
        Hepatitis A vaccine which is in the early phases of testing under
        an IND. Data suggests that all recipients develop antibody
        following a single high dose of the high potency formulation.
        However, data are limited to only about 40 total recipients.
        Additional data are required to provide a high degree of
        certainty about the immitnogenicity and safety of this product.
        WRAIR will carry out appropriate field studies to obtain this
        data immediately. Approximately                of this vaccine
        will be available soon. Large lots are plann     (POC for

        RECOMMENDATIONS:

        1. Institute IND Hepatitis A vaccination immediately.

        2. WRAIR should assess rapid immunization schedules in U.S.
        soldiers immediately.
