         Northern Iraq and Western Saudi Arabia. In Iraq, only P. vivax
         is found and in Saudi Arabia, P. falciparum predominates.

         Neither country reports chlorocluine-resistance.

         2. It was determined that yellow fever vaccine was not

         necessary as there was no disease threat in this specific
         region. In addition, cholera, plague and pre-exposure rabies
         vaccines were not recommended. While hepatitis B is highly

         endemic in this area, pre-exposure immunization was not

         recommended as exposure was considered to be extremely

         unlikely.

         3. other significant threats discussed included heat injuries

         and various other diseases/conditions, particularly

         gastrointestinal. Brucellosis, endemic in this portion of the
         world, is contracted principally by eating/drinking .
         contaminated food products; camel and goat's milk in particular

         and cheeses made from these products are significant in the
         transmission. Milk provided by cattle is reasonably safe as it

         should be pasteurized. Cutaneous leishmaniasis is widely

         prevalent particularly in Eastern Saudi Arabia.

         4. All troops need to deploy and use insect repellents (DEET

         and Permanone). Troops must avoid setting up their tents near

         rodent (intermediate host in leishmaniasis transmission)

         burroughs. Troops should be careful to avoid direct skin

         exposure to contaminated water as schistosomiasis is also

         present. Wearing the uniform sleeves down, pant legs tucked

         inside the boot ... etc helps reduce the risk of disease

         transmission.
