                                   INFORMATION PAPER

SUBJECT: Recovery of Biological Warfare Defense Vaccines/Antitoxin (U)

       1. (U) Purpose. To provide information on the medical products
       recovered from Southwest Asia (SWA).

       2. (U) Facts.

           a. (U) MAJ Cline and CPT Whitten from the U.S. Army Medical
Research Institute of Infectious Disease retrieved the unused vaccines
and antitoxin from the 47th MEDSOM between 1-10 May 91.

           b. The following table shows the total number of doses of
each product sent into the SWA and the number of doses retrieved.

                PRODUCT

                ANTHRAX
                BOT VACCINE
                BOT ANTITOXIN

           c. @ Durina Operation Desert Shield anthrax
vaccine and botulinum vaccine were issued to units and
subsequently returned to the 47th MEDSOM. Since continuous Storage
conditions at the units cannot be absolutely verified and degradation
may have occurred, it is recommended that these portions of the
       retrieved products be destroyed.

           d. On 17 Apr 91, the refrigeration unit housing the anthrax
and botulinum vaccines and botulinum antitoxin at the 47th MEDSOM
malfunctioned due to an oil level drop in the diesel engine. This
anthrax vaccine will be held in suspended status until it reaches its
expiration date, on or about Jan 92. The testing schedule for new
vaccine will not permit testing of returned anthrax vaccine at this
time. If an urgent requirement occurs prior to their expiration date,
these returned anthrax stocks will be retested to determine usability
(test takes 30 days). The batulinum vaccine and antitoxin will also
irement.

           e. Production of vaccines and antitoxin continues at a
maximum pace. Although far short of the total requirements, current
levels of these products in the CONUS base are as follows:
