DETECTION
The following information, if available, will help in
determining the occurrence of a biological attack.
0 The number of acutely ill military and civilian parties. A
,3r e r of casualties with similar clinical findings
woul be expected in the first hours or days and, in the case
of toxins, as short as minutes. The epidemiology should be
that of a massive single source.
e The atta rate clinical illness will be very :,@gh
relative @o those at risk.
0 The illness type al or "impossible" for the
geographic area. or example, Venezuelan equine encephalitis
in Europe.
0 Signature of the aerosol route of exposure. There may be
an unusual prevalence tory involvement in diseases
that, when acquired in nature, almost always cause a different
non-pulmonary syndrome. For example, inhalation anthrax
versus cutaneous anthrax.
f@4*1(@
0 Record faQIigy rates. An unusual number of fulminating
and fatal cases result from the fact that a large nfimber of
individuals at the high density region of the infectious or
toxic cloud will be exposed to multiples of the lethal dose by
aerosol. Others receiving smaller doses may show classical
clinical syndromes. Rapidly fatal cases may develop few
distinctive symptoms and signs.
0 Definitive geo c areas of disease. When aegosols are
used, es will tend to coincide with wind direction and
are predictable.
0 Evidence of simultaneous exposure to multi2le agents.
* Evidence of exposure to one or more unusual or exotic
pathogens.
0 Evidence of low attack rate in those working in areas with
filtered air or a closed ventilation system. Personnel
working indoors at the time of the attack may also show longer
attack rates.
