                          MEDICAL BIOLOGICAL WARFARE DEFENSE
                        ACTION PLAN FOR OPERATION DESERT SHIELD
                              SUPPORTING INFORMATION (U)

        1.      Assumptions for anthrax vaccination:

                   a. The vaccination schedule for each service member
        (SM) is two vaccinations; day 0 and two weeks later. As stocks
        become available a third dose would be given to complete the
        vaccination series.

                   b. For  @S.4--s it takes two weeks to administer the
        first dose in the AOR and two weeks to administer the second dose.
      -It takes an additional two weeks for immunity to build up for the
        SM's to be protected.

        2. a" Projection of the number of SM's protected against anthrax
        if vaccination begins on 10 Dec 90 and vaccination continues as
        vaccine is available. This is based on optimal vaccine
        production. Deficiencies in production will reduce the number of
        SM's who can be vaccinated. Each SM's will initially receive two
        doses of the anthrax vaccine. Doses available are those that are
        in the AOR once the plan is approved.              of anthrax vaccine
        which will be available on 15 Dec 90 and not listed in table below
        will be kept at selected medical treatment facilities in the AOR to
        be used to treat exposed SM's.
