         Japanese Encephalitis Vaccine FY90 mitest@ III R&D
is profited cost from Wait Brandt, 25 Apr 89. It witl reach
milestone III in FY90. Deacon (Japanese firm) could supply IND stocks in FY90 but arrangements would have to
be made with Canought (US firm) to store the vaccine. Expect Camught to have FDA license in FY92. At that
time DPSC would enter picture. Could exhaust stocks of the JAP E vaccine and remove it from contingency stock
status and have P-8 @ies buy it mt.)
(13 Oct 89. Watt. Is c@rciatly available from Japan. Can consider contingency stocks. Licensed product
has 5 yrs shelf Life. cmld do testing at 4th year to see if good or not and make decisions an buying more or
not. Camught is at Swiftwater, Pe beside the Saik Institute. They could do bulk storage and testing. Asked
         Wait to Look into situation.
17 Nov 89. Wait. If decide to buy JE vaccine now, it would take until FY91 to get the contracts in tine. JE
has shelf life of 5 years. Could establish a shelf life testing program after the five years because the
vacci ms would be IND itm then. WRAIR my have a one shot Live JE vaccine sow. The second storage site was
planned for Fort Detrick but that would cost $300K and would be MCA furkled which would take a Long time.
Alternative would be to rent space at the Nati@t Center for Toxicology Research (NCTR) in Jefferson,
Arkansis. Salk would do the testing. NCTR has plenty of space.
2 Feb 90. Asked wait if can buy JE for contingency. Said can buy I will confer with COL
Takfuji. Walt also must find out for m if we buy the vaccines as IND, when they are FDA approved do these
vaccines also also become FDA approved so we do not have to Use IND procedures for administration? Watt owes
         m an answer on this.
ugh to cover a force of I would be willing to buy
enough for a force IND vaccines must be able to be FDA approved when that happens
since it is the same wriufacturer. Wait said it will take 9 months to obtain the contract to buy JE vaccine.
It is only an @ic disease threat in Korea and ThaiLarid.
8 Feb 90. COL TAKAFUJI agreed that it will be rotated with P-8 requiremnts. He thinks
sol-,fitf@s witl @ to be vaccinated during peacetime. He is not sure monies are available from COL
Gray. If this is for the SOF forces than they my be able to pay for the vaccines and etc.

(1 Mar 90) Dr. Mike Roy, AV 343-7661, USAMMDA, TO TAKE OF SOLDIERS FOR
11 INDIVIDUAL WHICH HAS BEEN ALREADY DONE UNDER IND
STATUS. Need info from Takafugi on actual requirements
                                                                               ITN
         as takafugi told m.

9 JUL 90. Wait said $10/dose. DR. PAUL ALBRIGHT of the FDA said that we can purchase JE vaccine before it is
Licensed and consider it Licensed after the approval is given. So we buy IND material and it becomes Licensed
material after Paperwork comes through. d
