Protection Factor Test Methodo!ogy for ICD 1536 Cream Evaluation.

                    Test Description.

The ICD 1536 cream evaluation was conducted on 25 Aug 1990, In Building E5604, Aberdeen
Proving Ground, MD, by the I ndmdual Protection Division of the ChomicaJ Research, Development and
Engineering Center (CRDEC). Two mask systems, the M17 and M40, were evaluated to determine the
effect that the cream would have on the sea] of the masks. Twenty-two subjects were evaluated wearing
both masks with and v(rtholit the ICD I r>36 crp-am.

                    Test Procedure.

Upon arrival at the test facility, the subjects were given a detailed description of the test
procedures and the pu@ose of the study. After the subjects had completed the orientation and signed
the volunteer agreement forms they ware sized In each of the mask systems. Once all the subjects had
been sized testing of both the Ml 7 and M40 masks without the ICD 1536 cream was conducted.
Subjects were fated with each mask system prior to entering the test chamber by CRDEC employees
experienced In rating the two mask systems.
At the completion of testing vi:thoin ttie 'CD 1536 cream each subject was given a measured
amount of iCD 1536 cream and Instructed on the proper use procedures by MRICO personnel fatwliar
with the @em. After allowing the [CD 1536 cream to dry for exactly 30 minutes, the subjects again
donned their masks and were fated by CRDEC personnel. At the end of each test with the ICD 1536
f any
residue. The subjects would repeat the procedures for the next test The subjects would ajtemato whic'n
mask was test first to reduce the bias associated with the order of testing.

                    Corn Oil Test Method.

A challenge concentration ol approximately 25 mg/M3 of corn oil In the form of polydispersed
aerosol, having a mass mean aerodynamic diameter (MMAD) of 0.5-0.6 um, Is generated In a 4 ft x 6 ft x
7 1/2 ft chamber. The challenge test chamber atmosphere Is generated by atomizing the liquid corn oil
at room temperature using a Laskin nozzle. The Laskin noz7Jo produces a course aerosol cloud, which
Is sent to an Impactor plate that removes the larger particles and yields an aerosol In the desirod size
range. The aerosol concentration In the chamber Is controlled by diluting the concentrated aerosol from
the generators with room air. The leakage lot aerosol into the respirator Is measured by continuously
sampliog at a rate of 1 L/m!n from Inside the respirator faceplece. Sampling Is accomplished through a
length of flexible silicone tubing that connects the sample port In the mask to the photometer. A
ffve-docade forward-Ilght scattering photometer Is used to analyze and quantffy the amount of light
scattered by the aerosol particles In the sample stream and convening h to a voltage. The signal Is then
digitized and recorded by a microcomputer. A protection factor Is calculated by the computer and
                    recorded on flexible discs.

The following standard series of exercises were performed while testing:

                            o Normal breathing
                            o Deep breathing
o Head movement, side to side
o Head movement, up and down
o Talking (reche the rainbow passage)
                            o Sight, a rMe
                            o Touch floor and ceiling
o On hands and knees, looking up right and left
o Facial expressions (yawning, smuing. frowning and
                             . rolating the chin)
                            o Normal breathing
