                                g.  Blister fluid does not contain mustard, will
                                not cause blisters
                          2. Eyes
                                a. Mild: Usually effects occur 4--12 hours after
                                exposure and consist of itching, lachrymation, a
                                sensation of grit in the eye,            burning and
                                photophobia.    Hyperemia of palpebral and bulbar
                                conjunctivae and possibly edema of the lips.
                                Recovery in 1--2 weeks.
                                b. Moderate: Onset 3--6 hours post exposure.
                                Marked blepharospasm and edema of lids (and
                                closure of eyes), marked hyperenia of conjunctiva,
                                mild iritis and edema of the epithelium of the
                                cornea. Maybe a mucoserous discharge. Miosis may
                                occur (see below). Recovery in 3--6 weeks.
                                0.    Severe:   Onset 1--3 hours after exposure.
                                Severe pair, severe blepharospasm, marked
                                hyperemia and edema of conjunctiva, edema of lids,
                                epithelium and stroma of cornea are damaged.
                                Later there is edema of the stroma of the cornea,
                                iritis, and there may be dense corneal
                                opacification with ulceration. Some may have
                                corneal ulcers or perforation of the anterior
                                chamber.
                                d. Xn WWI 75% of eye injuries were mild. only a
                                very small percent had permanent damage.
                          3.  Respiratory system
       a.    Onset may be more prolonged with effects
                                      occurring 2--36 hours after exposure,
                                      initial signs/syzaptoms are those of acute
                                      tracheobronchitis
                                b.  Causes edema and necrosis of mucosa of
                                      airways with later pseudoraembrane formation;
                                      alveolar hemorrhage; usually followed by
                                      infection
                                c.  Approximate tire course for moderate exposure
                                      2--4 hours:      cheat tightness, sneezing,
                                      rhinorrhea, epistaxis, hoarseness,
                                      hacking cough
                                      4--16 hours: sinus pain, mild tachypnea
                                      16--48 hours:   severe cough, aphonia, marked
                                      tachypnea
                                      24--48 hours:       severe dyspnea; alveolar
                                      hemorrhage; bronchopneumonia
                                d.    Primary lesion is damage to airway wall
                                      (necrosis of mucosa) with later formation of
                                      pseudome@rane.        other    changes,      i.e.,
                                      hemorrhange,    edema   in   alveoli,     follow.
                                      Pseudomembrane may be coughed up as cast of
                                      airways
