                                THE MEDICAL MANAGEMENT OF CHEMICAL
                                      CASUALTIES COURSE (M2C3)

The Medical Management of Chemical Casualties Course, M2C3,
is conducted by the US Army Medical Research Institute of
Chemical Defense for the Army Surgeon General. It is the only
formal postgraduate medical education in this field in the
Department of Defense. Conducted at Aberdeen Proving Ground for
over 20 years. the course normally trains SOO physicians and
               other health professionals yearly.
The course at home station consists of 5 days of classroom,
practical, and field instruction on mechanisms of action and
medical defense against chemical warfare agents, medical
operations in a chemical environment, patient decontamination and
evacuation, and common-sense training of field medical@ soldiers.
The course includes students of all services and of many allied
nations. Graduation requires passing a challenging examination
with a pass rate for physicians of about 80% at home station.
Graduates gain the knowledge and confidence needed to operate
effective chemical casualty care systems. The course is an Army
professional military education Officer Record Brief entry and is
now a pre-command requirement for Army Medical Corps officers.
In September 1990 the CINC, USCENTCOM directed execution of
this course in theater for all US medical elements and attachment
of a course faculty cell to the CENTCOM staff. Instruction in
all requirements of the normal S
day course in 3 days, including over 40 hours of instruction,
field training, and directed study. CINCCENT's priority of
effort focused first on medical elements of Army and Marine
divisions and other forward deployed units.
                    From 12 Oct 90 through 13 Dec 90, 16 M2C3 courses were
conducted in the AOR. The examination pass rate was 96%.
Graduates totaled 1453, including 677 military physicians, 96
PAs, and 61 civilian physicians. The additional graduates were
dental, nurse Corps, MSC, and chemical officers and senior
enlisted medical specialists. Allied graduates from Saudi
Arabia, UK, France, Canada, and the UAE made up 273 of this
total. In response to a CINCCENT request, predeployment M2C3
instruction is now underway in Germany and CONUS for later
               deploying units of all services.
