3.0 Risk Estimates
Two differ4ht approaches are used in the calculation of toxic chemical risks.
e cancer (carcinogens), an actual risk estimate (i.e. A
probability value that is a function of potency and exposure) is calculated
-(Slooe Factor * Lifetime Average Daily Exposure)
Risk I,- e
The calculated risk estimates for carcinogens represent the theoretical excess
tancer risk (i.e. risk over background cancer) incidence) that a person exposed
An agent under the specified conditions will develop cancer. For example,
he calculated risk is 1 9-6. this would literally suggest that an
i...jividual exposed to the agent will have a one-in-a-million th&nce of getting
canter because of the exposur*p in addition to her/his chance of gotti64 cancer
-from other causes. vor, in view of the largo uncertainties
Associated with such risk estimates, they should always be interpreted As
general indicators rather than precise estimates. The U.S. Environmental
Protection Agency (EPA) generally considers risks below I e-6 to be low.
