              SUBJECT: Post-Operation Desert Shield/Storm (ODS) Medical Issues


              independent, expert, civilian working group is being formed to
              review the medical records of a sample of these patients with
              unexplained illnesses in an attempt to formulate diagnostic
              criteria and provide further guidance. In the meantime, your
              health care providers must ensure that these 01)8 patients receive
              thorough evaluation, compassionate care with continuity, and
              proper doc=entation of their cases in medical records, to
              include full compliance with the special ODS telegraphic
              reporting (MM-16) requirement.

              S. Informing clinici;;-ng and patients of the ongoing efforts to
              investigate these medical issues should assist in maintaining the
              credibility of t!he military medical care system. A more detailed
              discussion of these issues is planned for the Deputy Commanders
              for Clinical Services Conference,                r 1993.
