             (President BLish's ultimatum to Saddam Hussein was to
             depart Kuwait by 15 JAN) probably added to the confusion.

                 16 JAN: Informed that 4468 Tac Recon Group would
             launch three drones on 17 JAN (0300-CI500, OBOVI-IQ)00, 2200-
               410 hrs). Units instructed to keep aircraft clear of
             launch sites during these times. lst Bde had an MB
             Chemical Alarm alerting; a chemical survey of the area
             produced negative results, and it was determined to be a
             false alarm caused by emplacing the M8 -too close to
             vehicle exhausts. Units were advised of the possibility of
             false alarms from this source. SINGARS Rettan5 system
             installed in three vehicles (Bde Commo, 1-3 Atk Hel Bn and
             I- @'@'7 Atk Hel Bri).


                 17 JAklu Received lst CAV FRAGO #91-6. Informed (0215
             ht,s) that ARCENT OPLAN CICII is in effect; lqikl Tomahawk
             cruise missiles launched against enemy. grigade instructed
             to begin taking NAPP (Nerve Agent Pyridostigmine
             Pretreatment) pills, one per eight hours (QI310 hrs). 1-3
             Atli Hel Bn reports aircraft fully uploaded; 1-227 Atk Hel
             Bn in process of completing upload (03z@O his). Received
             Scud alert. three missiles launched (one at Israel, two A-@
             Saudi Arabia) at 0414 hrs. Attack battalions placed on
             REDCON I at 13'DO hrs. Possible enemy ground attacks
             reported at OS 47z@998 and PS 860460. 1-227 ordered to move
             to Holding Area vie PL Mary (NS 860.'@70) at 1345. Mission
             cancelled by D-RAC at 14QIB hrs (about one minute after I-
             ;@27 (Atk Hel Bn had launched).


                 18 JAN: DMAIN orders all units on 100% alert (0400
             hr,s). Units ordered to assume MOPP Level I at 0520 hrs.
s three large explosions in Dhahran; Dhahran
             ai-rbase placed at Condition Red (later determined that
             these explosions were caused by friendly aircraft
             releasing bombs into an ordnance jettison area). Ist Cav
             assumed MOPP, level 0 at 0855 hrs. Ist CAV FRAGO #91--l
             rescinded at 1400 hrs.


                 19 JAN: Received FRAGO #63-91 (QUICKFIX missions). lst
             Cav reports possible chemical attack vie NS 8449 (later
             determined to be false). Received ist Gav FRAGOs #91-7 and
             91--S. DMAIN instructs units to stop taking NAPP pills
             (1111 hrs). Instructed to have one attack battalion and
             two OH58D5s on standby at Al OttasLtmah airfield prior to
             darkness. Informed that 1-7 Cav received DF2 instead of
