COAMPS is designed to couple a nonhydrostatic, fully compressible atmospheric model to a hydrostatic, incompressible multi-level ocean model. The atmospheric model includes predictive equations for momentum, the nondimensional pressure perturbation, the potential temperature, and the mixing ratios of water vapor, clouds, rain, ice and snow. Although the oceanic model is not included in the current version of COAMPS, the surface fluxes of momentum, heat and moisture are parameterized, and computations are based on static oceanic fields. The COAMPS grid is tripled-nested, with the outer mesh having a resolution of 45 km, an inner mesh of 15 km, and a fine mesh of 5 km.
The COAMPS model is being used to drive the other atmospheric and oceanographic models.
