SUBJECT: DESERT DEFENDER

Flea collars pose health risk

People deployed for Operation Desert Shield who use flea and tick collars to combat desert parasites are at risk to various health hazards, Armed Forces Pest Management Board officials said.
Flea and tick collars are for use on pets, and aren't effective or safe for use by humans, they said.
If used by humans, flea and tick collars could adversely affect the nervous system of the wearer and have the capability to set off chemical alarms, which could be a problem in the event of a chemical attack, officials said. The Pest Management Board recommends the use of the insect repellent system and personal protective measures that have been established for people deployed to the Persian Gulf region.
In addition, by wearing the collars around the ankles, wrists and neck, people can develop organic phosphate toxicity symptoms, officials said. (Air Force News Service).
