Deployment: We were first informed of possible deployment in early- August. Our efforts were focused on preparing the Air Transportable Clinic for deployment as well as initiating preventive medicine actions prior to deployment. The air transportable clinic (ATC) was already 90% ready, thanks to the efforts of the 366 Med Gp hospital supply section and the members of the 390 ECS Squadron Medical Element (SME). The clinic was then made fully ready and additional supplies were added. These additional supplies included items such as extra IV solu- tions to treat dehydration, additional medications, etc. A sig- nificant number of man-hours were expended by Captain Johnson and his hospital supply staff as well as by Tsgt Berry and A1C Irwin of the 390 ECS SME. By the time of our deployment, the ATC was fully ready to deploy. Preventive medicine actions included preparing predeployment briefings as well as providing immunizations and other prophylactic measures. Due to our previously assigned Checkered Flag location we already had a significant amount of information about the region in order to provide briefings and other measures. The deployment briefing was handled by Dr. John Fischer of the 390 ECS. His briefing was complete and covered all of the important aspects of preventive medicine peculiar to the deployment location. Since we were told we might be deploying very quickly we initiated immunizations prior to receiving any message traffic from HQ TAC or HQ CENTAF. Immune serum globulin, meningococcal vaccine, and malaria prophylaxis with chloroquine were initially given. After more guidance was received the meningococcal vaccine and, later, malaria prophylaxis were discontinued. b. Desert Shield: We deployed on 22 Aug 90 and arrived at our deployment loca- tion on 24 Aug. Dr. Frank Archer and A1C Brett Irwin arrived with the first deployed aircraft. TSgt Jimmy Berry arrived about a week later. Initially, the only supplies that we had were those carried with us, which made the medical care that we were able to 30 U N C L A S S I F I E D
