DISCUSSION - On/about 24 Jan 91, 570 personnel, mainly flight line mechanics, were disabled by diarrhea, potentially caused by food poisoning. Sixty-four were hospitalized and six aircrew were DNIF. Eight combat sorties were lost as a direct result. - Locally purchased food that was not medically inspected is suspected of introducing the illness. - Food service at Jeddah New is by contract. - An official medical report on the incident has not yet been received. - SG briefed the Battle Staff on the incident on 24 Jan 91 as follows: -- Slide: --- Medical Information Update ---- Food Borne Illness Outbreak Jeddah ---- Personnel Affected 570 ---- Personnp1 Hospitalized 64 ---- Personnel DNIF 6 -- Narrative: --- "Sir, this slide depicts the current status of the diarrhea outbreak at Jeddah. Although the source of the outbreak has not yet been identified, a messing contractor is strongly suspected. Of particular interest is the fact that there are no indications that the outbreak is linked to hostile activity."
