When Operation Desert Shield was implemented, many units from
different commands were bedded down at the same location (i.e., C-
130s and F-l5Es at Thumrait). Consequently, each wanted to use its
command-unique supply procedures to maintain visibility and control
of its own assets and personnel. This created a "union card"
atmosphere and made the entire supply/fuel operation inefficient.
What tied the organizations together was the installation of a data
automation system that mirrored tbe AF supply system under a single
Chief of Supply. The USCENTAF Supply Support Activity (CSSA) at
Langley AFB VA was created to establish a central data base to
which all supply/equipment/fuels transactions were funneled.
Within the Supply Directorate, the Supply Systems Specialists, AFSC
64572, were critical to get the Standard Base Supply System (SBSS)
initialized in the AOR. These personnel orchestrated the transfer
of supply records from home station to the deployed site. This
facilitated on-line processing supply transactions and
significantly improved weapon system support. Additionally, the
liaison with deployed Chiefs of Supply and respective remote
processing stations was constant; ensuring communications
connectivity, systems configuration, scheduling computer reports,
and running interference, etc. The on-line SBSS capability is one
of the most significant success stories of the entire Air Force
operation. The host wing was responsible for supply support for
tbe entire base and consolidated supply functions under one
umbrella. MICAP and WRSK personnel from each unit still had
custody and visibility of their unit's assets, and fuels personnel
had greater resources to service aircraft and vehicles. When fully
