File: 111396_aacvt_17.txtWhen Operation Desert Shield was implemented, many units from different commands were bedded down at the same location (i.e., C- 130s and F-l5Es at Thumrait). Consequently, each wanted to use its command-unique supply procedures to maintain visibility and control of its own assets and personnel. This created a "union card" atmosphere and made the entire supply/fuel operation inefficient. What tied the organizations together was the installation of a data automation system that mirrored tbe AF supply system under a single Chief of Supply. The USCENTAF Supply Support Activity (CSSA) at Langley AFB VA was created to establish a central data base to which all supply/equipment/fuels transactions were funneled. Within the Supply Directorate, the Supply Systems Specialists, AFSC 64572, were critical to get the Standard Base Supply System (SBSS) initialized in the AOR. These personnel orchestrated the transfer of supply records from home station to the deployed site. This facilitated on-line processing supply transactions and significantly improved weapon system support. Additionally, the liaison with deployed Chiefs of Supply and respective remote processing stations was constant; ensuring communications connectivity, systems configuration, scheduling computer reports, and running interference, etc. The on-line SBSS capability is one of the most significant success stories of the entire Air Force operation. The host wing was responsible for supply support for tbe entire base and consolidated supply functions under one umbrella. MICAP and WRSK personnel from each unit still had custody and visibility of their unit's assets, and fuels personnel had greater resources to service aircraft and vehicles. When fully
