File: 970207_aadci_041.txtODS MEDICAL LESSONS LEARNED LOGISTICS CATEGORY LOGISTICS ISSUE NO. 11 Body armor, helmets, unavailable (SGHR ITEMS NO. 105, 111) BACKGROUND: Medical personnel found themselves in an environment where body armor was essential but not previously identified. Consequently, there was a shortage of body armor and helmets on mobilization. DISCUSSION: TA 016, Special Purpose Clothing and Personnel Equipment, authorizes each individual assigned to a hostile fire environment to have body armor and a helmet issued. these items were not available and were borrowed or emergency requisitioned. RECOMMENDATION: Assign body armor and helmet for each individual as part of standard mobility bag issue. Items should be worn by personnel during training exercises. ACTIONS REQUIRED: This is not a medical issue. AF/LG is addressing this issue for all functional areas to meet future theater requirements. Previous planning for a contingency in SWA did not contain a requirement for all personnel to have body armor. CENTCOM established the requirement early in ODS causing problems for the entire Air Force (not just for medical personnel). Recommend these MLL be closed as a medical issue. ACTIONS COMPLETED: N/A. STATUS: Recommend closure.
