SUBJECT: CENTAF SG HYDROGEN SULFIDE (H2S) MEMO

            To: CENTAF/DOS (Maj Richardson)
Subj: Hydrogen Sulfide (H2S) - Admiral Fitzgerald 14 Feb 91 Ltr

H2S is a very dangerous and toxic gas that is commonly found as
an off-gas by-product in the petroleum industry.

I would doubt if AF personnel would have much potential for
exposure to H2S despite the oil fields in Kuwait probably are
producing fair quantities of H2S. Army & Marine personnel would
certainly need to be concern about H2S exposures if a ground war
            was to start.

Some BEE folks in the AOR have explosive meters and most have
detector kits for some hydrocarbons. I don't know if they have
           H2S detector tubes.

There are all kinds of small (pager size) detectors commercially
available to monitor for toxic gases including H2S. These
sniffers are readily available and many BEE shops in the states
have them. We probably can get them here locally also. They
typically cost about $750 a piece.

Since the AF probably won't be near the oil fields, it is
doubtful if we need any sniffers. I can probably get some within
a week if the need arises. Please advise.
