                                         MEDICAL LESSONS LEARNED
                                              DESERT SHIELD/STORM
       CATEGORY: Blood

       ISSUE/ITEM NO:

       SUBJECT: Donor Recruitment

BACKGROUND: Short-notice recruitment of blood donors can be a significant
challenge to blood donor centers. Numerous methods are used at the base level,
including assignment of quotas to units, media solicitation, and others.

DISCUSSION: One base developed a separate roster for coding of all potential
donors, military and civilian, who indicated a willingness to volunteer. This
facilitates rapid access to individuals and those units with large numbers of
volunteers. This information could be a vital asset in filling short-notice
taskings or filling specific group/type requirements.

ACTION RECOMMENDED: Approve AF Form 1000 submitted under separate coyer.

       SUGGESTED OPRs/OCRs: HQ USAF/SGHR

       SUBMITTER: Terry W. Clarke/Capt/HQ ATC/SGAX
