DESERT SHIELD/STORM LESSONS LEARNED REPORT #R

           POC: [(2)(b)] SGR/

TITLE: Reservist's Awareness of Mobilization Vulnerability

OBSERVATION: Many IRR and retired regular members did not
know they were eligible for mobilization.

DISCUSSION: SG received many complaints and inquiries from
the individuals in the IRR and retired regular regarding
their mobilization. Most of these individuals did not know
they were eligible for mobilization. The IRR officer
members, in particular, were not aware that they were
mobilization assets since they did not resign their
           commissions.

LESSONS LEARNED: Reservists must be better informed of
           their mobilization vulnerability.

RECOMMENDED ACTIONS: All officer and enlisted personnel
separating from active duty need to be more thoroughly
briefed on their remaining military service obligation. In
particular, all officers must be made aware that they are
separated from active duty and transferred to the Reserve
unless they resign their commissions. Also, military
service obligation must be stressed during the recruitment
           process.
