(U) 1 Mar 91- The 823rd Red Horse requested that EOD representatives
attend a meeting at the Red Horse orderly room at Eskan Village at 1500 hours
local.
1500 - The meeting was chaired by Major Early and Major Smiley of 823rd
Red Horse. The mission was to establish a Minimum Operating Strip (MOS) at
Jalibah AB, Iraq, clear the 4,700 foot runway, and exploit any intelligence
information. The team was composed of six explosive ordnance disposal (EOO)
technicians, one communications technician and enough explosives, EOD
equipment, one 1038 HMMV (vehicle), general supplies, MREs, and water for one
day. The six man EOD team would deploy to Jalibah AB, Iraq. This EOD team
was identified as Bravo team. The team would be resupplied as soon as the MOS
was opened. In depth intelligence of the base, expected ordnance, aircraft,
enemy forces, and condition of the runway was not available. Needed maps of
the area would be provided that night. The team was told to drive to King
Khalid Military City (KKMC) and from there they would to be flown to Jalibah
AB by a CH-47 helicopter. Driving time from Riyadh AB, to KKMC is
approximately six hours. Sending the CH-47 to Riyadh to Pick up the vehicle
and team could have saved manhours.
(U) 1645 - Team began to prepare equipment for deployment.
(U) - Equipment lcadout consisted of enough C-4, both electric and
non-electric caps and FLCC for approximately 70 demolition shots. We also
took six Sabre radios (for communication with Red Horse personnel), M122
Firing Device, general purpose tools, three 14 Surface Munitions Disruption
(SMUD) Rifles, six M-16s' and a Barrett Light .50 calibre for SMUD operations.
The Barrett was borrowed from an Army unit stationed at Eskan Village.
(U) 2250 - EOD equipment preparation is complete and team returns to
billets.
(U) 2300 - SMSgt Cobbins! EOD Team Chief, contacts CENTAF/DOSE for mission
update. Capt Armour inrGrmed him that some of the plans have changed
and a mission number was still not available.
(U) 2 Mar 91
(U) 0505 - Team Chief went to DOSE for mission information and maps.
0700 - Chief Stone, CENTAF FED EOD Manager, makes contact with
Intelligence. They provide mission objectives, expected Allied dropped
ordnance, runway condition, battle damage assessment photos, and a base grid
map. Intelligence didn't expect us to find chemical/biological munitions.
(U) 0930 - Riyadh EOD Term arrives at 8Z3rd Red Horse orderly Room for
final mission fleeting before departure. CH-47 mission number still not
available and Red Horse representative stated it would be provided by POC at
KKMC. EOD Team Chief provided Red Horse with detailed intelligence they had
obtained from CENTS. Red Horse was prepared to deploy with only a base grid
map.
(U) 1200 - Team departs Es',;an Village with Combat Communications
technician, Sgt Faust.
