(U) - We cleared a Hardened Aircraft Shelter (HAS) and relocated our -
base camp to it.
(U) - The austere conditions remained. We began to make plans for
the reception of Red Horse the next day and cleared another HAS for their use.
(U) - Located more CBU bomblets on the infield. They probably were
blown in by the wind. Items were neutralized using same above procedures.
(U) - Nightly guard duty continued.
(U) 5 Mar 91
- Although tire ruts were followed, a team ran over a M-42
bomblet from the US multiple launch rocket system (MLRS) . The bomblet blew
out two rear tires and punctured the fuel tank.
(U) - Sixteen Red Horse, three CCT and two Special Communication
personnel joined our team. Personnel were given a safety briefing and shown
the damaged vehicle.
- During a base orientation for Red Horse the EOD guide
spotted a M-42 bomblet and the vehicle was stopped only inches from impact.
- MISSION CHANGE: EOD notified that US Army personnel were
coming to our base for airlift back to CONUS. EOD operations were reduced to
virtually a standstill. Demo operations halted until we could control
the area. Anxious Army personnel were backed up from the mid-field for almost
a mile.
(U) - The EOD team stayed busy clearing mum ions not requiring
demolition and further surveyed for ordnance around the base.
- We received a number of requests from the Army to identify
ordnance. They wanted us to Identify an S5k-PB rocket and a Russian Mk2
grenade which was under their ambulance.
(U) - One Army Spec 4 (non EOD) had to be corrected by us and his
commander for handling munitions and taking them as souvenirs. He accumulated
13 each Mk2 grenades. Further, he even tried to scare female soldiers by
throning an unfused grenade under their ambulance. The last time we saw this
troop, he was handcuffed by the MPs with his face in the dirt.
(U) 7 Mar 91
(U) - 0700, COO Team began assisting Red Horse by moving hard bombs
from storage bunkers for placement on runway. Worked late into the night
blowing craters into the rankly. The M122 firing device was used with two
resulting misfires. Reasons for the misfired could not be determined
Equipment was checked prior use and after the misfire. No malfunction could
be found Subsequent shots were nonelectric and without incident
- Pailetized numerous intelligence items. Itemss are at Riyadh AB
awaiting disposition instructions.
- Red Horse blew up 30L taxiway. CCT was upset because they
didn't coordinate the shot and it impacted their operation. Now the
runway could only handle two C-130s instead of three. Air traffic was heavy.
