(U) RECOMMENDATIONS FOR FUTURE OPERATIONS
(U) COMMUNICATIONS- We needed Ground to Air radio capability. AN/MRC 107
tactical radios or a similar system would work. The ability to warn aircraft
to stay away while doing demolition work is a must. Helicopters were in the
area constantly.
(U) VEHICLES- vehicles that can carry more personnel (i.e. 4 door HMMWV).
Three HMMVs would have been ideal for our operation. All Terrain Vehicles
with hardened tires would have been useful.
(U) SMUD- Individualized weapons (Ml4). The time factor in changing shooters
and adjusting the sighting could have been cut by 1/2 if more weapons were
available. The Air Force EOD Program must emphasize live SMUD training for
all personnel. An academic and practical block of instruction could be
incorporated in the Basic EOD Course. Active EOD units should SMUD live
munitions at least once a year.
(U) TEAM COMPOSITION- For base denial and this operation, Red Horse personnel
had minimal demolition training. E0D personnel had to retrain the demolition
qualified-personnel and after a couple of demolition shots they were able to
work unsupervised. In the future, Red Horse personnel should be trained how
to charge hard bombs. With a few more EOD technicians, we could have done the
entire job faster and better. We could have done the entire job both the
runway and the munitions clearance. It took Red Horse three shots per crater,
we could have done each crater in one or two shots.
INTELLIGENCE - US Army Corps of Engineers must be taught about the
intelligence value of munitions and aircraft. It seemed to us, that they
indiscriminately destroyed everything in their path. MlG-29s, SUU-25,
FROGFOOT aircraft that could have been easily flown cut, were damaged. POCs
for intelligence gathering should build and disseminaate their desired wish
lists and if possible accompany these kind of missions.
(U) EQUIPMENT- EOD's equipment should be reviewed to endure all items are
state of the art and as light as possible. Gortex clothing must replace wet
weather gear. A water proof sleeping bag would have been useful. Bulky
lanterns must br upgraded to light weight lanterns which are much smaller,
lighter, and put out equal amounts of light. A six person tent per equipment
set must be added. EOD and equipment must be able to move quickly and easily.
(U) Easier to use, more durable video compact (8mm, system camera with.
focus capability and easier Nikonos/flash too hard to set up.
(U. SECURITY- Training on small team tactics would better prepare EOD teams to
provide their own security and give them a better understanding of Army
security procedures.
