JULLS LONG REPORT
1. (U) JULLS NUMBER: 509b5-73219 (00005), submitted by IST BRIBADE.
2. (U) No type conducted by on / / .
3. (U) KEYWORDS: NBC, SURVIVABILITY.
4. (U) TITLE: DESERT STORM AAR
S. (U) OBSERVATION: Soldiers were not confident with the
effectiveness of Pyreclostigmine Bromide (PB) tablets for nerve
agent pretreatment.
6. (U) DISCUSSION: Although PB had been in use with other NATO
countries as a pretreatment for nerve agent toxicosis, U.S.
soldiers were not introduced to it until Operation Desert Storm.
Some soldiers lost confidence in their ability to survive a
nerve agent attack because of several things. First, they did
not understand the link between PB and the strophine
sulfate/2-PAMCL auto injectors. Second, they feared taking ihe
pills because of newspaper reports that the pills wore not FDA
approved. Because of these concerns less than half the soldiers
in the Brigade Task Force took PB as a pretreatment.
7. (U) LESSON LEARNED: Always train as you plan to fight in
war. If PB is going to be a standard pretreatment for nerve
agents then planning for its use needs to be intergrated into
NBC training. Soldiers need to fully understand how the PB
enhances the Mark I Nerve Agent Antidote Kit (NAAK). Only when
soldiers regularly train with an item, will soldiers comfortably
use it in combat.
S. (U) RECOMMENDED ACTION: That the Brigade, Divisions and U.S.
Army fully integrate PB treatment into training and doctrine.
9. (U) COMMENTS: Although CANA (Diazepam) was issued to the
the operation it did not have the same problems
as the PB. Soldiers recognized the auto injector and were quick
to learn when to use it.
(U) SUBJECT: NONE
(U) INTEROPERABILITY: NONE
