SUBJECT: Wartime Casualty Reporting
1. Reference:
A. Msg 26120OZ JAN 91, CDR 18TIl PERS GRP//CASUALTY//, SAB.
B. AR 600-8-1, Army Casualty and Memorial Affairs and Line of Duty
Investigations.
2. The purpose of this memorandum is to inform units of new procedural
reporting requirements for submitting battle and nonbattle casualty
reports.
3. Effective immediately, all units will submit a casualty report (feeder
cards or TACCS-generated feeder reports) for all battle casualties
regardless of the severity of the casualty. A battle casualty is defined
as one who is wounded, injured, or affected by disease as a result of
enemy weapons or agents. Casualty reports will be immediately passed to
GI/D-REAR.
4. Disease Nonbattle Injuries classified as Very Seriously Injured or Ill
(VSI), Seriously Injured or Ill (SI), or Special Category IAW Chapter 4-8,
Ref B, will be expeditiously reported. Medical Authorities are the only
qualified personnel to classify patients as VSI (SMITE) or SI (GAVEL).
Units do not make that determination.
5. Special Interests reports (e.g. self-inflicted or accidental gunshot
wounds, vehicular accidents resulting in hospitalization) will also be
submitted IAW Chapter 6-2D, Ref B.
6. These procedures will be in effect until rescinded by DA.
