7. History's largest oil slick is getting larger and a second
slick released by Iraq into the Persian Gulf is also growing.
ARAMCO employee Freddie Costello said he's not even sure how big
it all is. "There's no such thing as hard and fast rules to work
out the size of spills." he said. "The error margins can be plus
or minus 50 percent when you're calculating a spill." Costello
said all resources are being used to protect water desalinization
plants in the region.
S. A National Transportation Safety Board official said an air
traffic controller at Los Angeles International Airport allowed a
small commuter plane onto a runway, then cleared a jetliner to
land on the same runway. The planes collided, resulting in at
least 15 deaths. Twenty-seven people are still unaccounted for.
More bodies may be recovered as the wreckage is cleared. Rescue
efforts were halted Saturday in order to pump fuel from the
leaking jetliner.
9. Some new Desert Camouflage Uniforms will soon be on the way.
Next week, the government will begin making new three-color
"Coffee stain" camouflage uniforms for the troops. Now soldiers
wear six-color "Chocolate Chip" camouflage uniforms that are made
from polyester and cotton. Experts said the new uniforms are
100 percent cotton and lighter in weight. The military plans to
make 150,000 of the new uniforms at a government clothing factory
in Philadelphia.
10. Some retired Marines in the Chicago area are now collecting
money to buy pet flea collars and send them to the troops.
Retired Marine Tom Day said troops wear the flea collars under
their pants when they blouse their boots, or on their wrist over
their uniform. But military doctors don't think too much of
troops wearing flea collars. They say phosphate on the collars
can irritate the skin.
fourth-graders took only 30 seconds
to convict Iraqi President Saddam Hussein of war crimes during a
mock trial. Saddam. played by Student Ricky Powers, flashed a
sinister smirk when the verdict was read. The kids pronounced a
wicked sentence on Saddam. saying he should be whipped, hanged,
boiled in oil and used as shark bait.
12. Postage rates went up yesterday. A Ist class stamp now costs
29 cents. Other postal rates have been hiked, too.
