                              JAYHAWK DAILY NEWS
                               February 4, 1991

      1. For the first time since Thursday, Iraq launched three SCUD
missiles, two at Israel and one at the Saudi capital. Riyadh.
The Riyadh SCUD was hit by a U.S. Patriot missile and fragments
landed on apartment buildings, causing 29 injuries. There was no
damage from the missiles that hit Israel. One SCUD landed in the
      predominately Arab West Bank.

      2. The U.S. Army will start inspecting the Bradley fighting
vehicle, which is designed to ferry infantrymen into heavy
combat. There have been two reported instances of a transmission
problem, a Pentagon spokesman said. A faulty transmission lever
could limit the Bradley's top speed to about 12 miles per hour.

      3. Iraq said it would use any weapon from kitchen knives to
weapons of mass destruction in its fight to keep Kuwait. The
London Sunday Times reported Saddam has given frontline
commanders permission to use chemical warheads at their
discretion. Quoting Pentagon officials, the report said it's no
longer a question of if Iraq will use chemical weapons, but when.
Secretary of Defense Dick Cheney addressed the issue on a Sunday
television program. "I assume he (Saddam) knows that if he were
to resort to chemical weapons that would be an escalation to
weapons of mass destruction." Cheney said. "The possibility
would then exist, certainly with respect to the Israelis, for
example, that they might retaliate with unconventional weapons as
      well."

      4. Lt. Gen. Tom Kelly. director of operations for the Joint
Chiefs of Staff, said the allies are learning some things from
Iraq prisoners of war. "Morale does not seem to be good. The
soldiers do not seem to be very well fed. They appear to be
thirsty. They don't really seem terribly aggressive to our forces
aid. "But that's not to say
that the other forces up in Iraq are going to lay down their arms
any time soon. We don't see any indication of that." The latest
POWs include three Iraqi soldiers who are no older than 16 years
of age. They told senior officers their company is taking two or
three casualties a night from allied bombing raids.

      5. During an interview with U.S. News, Gen. Norman Schwarzkopf,
commander of the U.S. Forces in the Persian Gulf, described
Saddam Hussein as a distraught man. Schwarzkopf said he has had
several reports that three doctors are treating Saddam with
      tranquilizers.

      6. Bombs exploded Sunday in Peru and Lebanon in terrorist attacks
linked by authorities to the Persian Gulf war. In Britain, the
Department of Transport said it is warning British airports and
all airlines operating in the country of a terrorist plot to bomb
      aircraft.
