          2. (U) Operation DESERT SHIELD/STORM conducted by CENTCOM on
          05/14/91.


          3. (U) KEYWORDS: CONSTRUCTION SKILLS

          4. (U) TITLE: Construction Skills in Line Companies

          5. (U) OBSERVATION: Engineer line companies were stretched to
          provide vertical construction expertise to their brigades.

          6. (U) DISCUSSION: Division units expected their engineers to
          provide some carpentry, plumbing, and electrical capability
          during the deployment. The 307th Engineer battalion is not
          assigned any carpenters, plumbers, or electricians by MOS. Some
          individuals had some of these skills, but this was a lucky
          coincidence. We had a Corps Engineer vertical platoon
          temporarily attached, which was a big help.

          7. (U) LESSON LEARNED: N/A

          B. (U) RECOMMENDED ACTION: In deployments to austere
          environments routinely plan to attach a vertical platoon. Also,
          have a certain number of interested individuals in line
          companies trained at local college in these construction skills
          at all times.
