                            JULLS LONG REPORT 05/17/91

         1. (U) JULLS NUMBER: 5155B-76429 (00019), submitted by 307 ENS
         (WAB(3AA), MAJ Nelson, 239-7680, (919)432-7BBO.

         2. (U) Operation DESERT SHIELD/STORM conducted by CENTCOM on
         05/14/91.

         3. (U) KEYWORDS: SUPPORT, TASKINGS

         4. (U) TITLE: Support Taskings

         5. (U) OBSERVATION: The method of support tasking used during
Operation DESERT SHIELD did not overtax the battalion or hinder
training as it does so often at Fort Bragg.

         6. (U) DISCUSSION: The line companies (with attached equipment
platoon) were in direct support of the Infantry Brigades, which
could forecast their engineer support needs and get it directly
from their DS assets. Other Division needs were handled by the
307th Engineer Bn (-) by working with S-3 Taskings. This same
system could work at Ft. Bragg using routine affiliation instead
of DS. Brigades (and MSCS) could get dedicated engineer support
(carpentry, concrete work, etc.) during the Brigade Support
         Cycle.

         7. (U) LESSON LEARNED: N/A

         S. (U) RECOMMENDED ACTION: Rather than task the Engineer
Battalion for recurring taskings, include their company numbers
with their supported brigades. That way an engineer company
would be available during the support cycle to do engineering
related construction projects -For that Brigade and other MSCS.
This would free the other battalion units from the training
         distractor of taskings.

         9. (U) COMMENTS: N/A

         10. (U) SUBJECT: OPERATIONS

         11. (U) Action managed by: CALL, action worked by: , RAP number:
               Lesson distributed by: DIVISION.
