         05/14/91.


         3. (U) KEYWORDS: FUEL, PODS

         4. (U) TITLE: Fuel Pods

         5. (U) OBSERVATION: The battalion does not have enough organic
         fuel haul capability to support division size operations in a
         remote area.

         6. (U) DISCUSSION: The lack of fuel haul capability was a
         significant shortfall during Operation DESERT STORM. The fuel
         consumption of engineer equipment far exceeds the fuel
         consumption of the other vehicles normally found in an Infantry
         Brigade. This coupled with the limited mobility of engineer
         equipment to move to fixed refueling sites makes this lack of
         fuel a critical shortage.

         7. (U) LESSON LEARNED: N/A

         S. (U) RECOMMENDED ACTION: The A&B platoon should have a fuel
         truck added to their MTO&E. The S4 should be given two fuel
         trucks, one for diesel and one for mogas. The three fuel pods
         that the S4 section has now should each go to a line company.
         They could haul these fuel pods with their supply truck.
