  SUBJECT: MARKING CHEMICALLY CONTAMINATED AREAS
  1. VIRTUALLY ALL CHEMICAL PERSONNEL ACKNOWLEDGE THAT THE NBC
WARNING AND REPORTING SYSTEM IS BROKEN. KNOWING THIS, ONE CAN
HARDLY EXPECT FOR WORD OF NBC CONTAMINATION TO REACH EVERY UNIT OR
EVERY PERSON MOVING TOWARD A CONTAMINATED AREA. THEREFORE, IT IS
INCUMBENT UPON COMMANDERS AND THEIR KEY ADVISORS TO EXERCISE
EXTRAORDINARY MEASURES TO ENSURE THAT FOLLOW ON UNITS DO NOT
INADVERTENTLY BECOME CONTAMINATED. THE PURPOSE OF THIS MSG IS TO
OFFER TWO TECHNIQUES FOR CONTAMINATITON AVOIDANCE.
  2. THE NBC MARKING KIT AND THE FOX RECON VEHICLE BOTH USE
YELLOW TRIANGULAR FLAGS TO MARK AREAS THAT ARE CHEMICALLY
CONTAMINATED. THIS WORKS WELL DURING DAYLIGHT HOURS BUT CANNOT BE
SEEN DURING HOURS OF DARKNESS. TO STANDARDIZE OPERATIONS WITHIN
VII CORPS AND TO ENSURE ALL UNITS CAN RECOGNIZE CONTAMINATED AREAS
AT NIGHT, RECOMMEND DROPPING A WATER BOTTLE CONTAINING A CHEM-LITE
(PREFERABLY YELLOW) AT EACH LOCATION WHERE A STANDARD GAS MARKER

  DANGER OF
VEHICLES MOVING ON THE AXIS OF ADVANCE PASSING THROUGH
THE CONTAMINATION. PARTICULAR ATTENTION IS REQUIRED TO ENSURE
POSITIVE LINK UP AND RELIEF BY TRAILING UNITS.
  4. (U) KEYS TO SUCCESS ARE POSITIVE COORDINATION WITH LEADING,
ADJACENT, AND TRAILING UNITS TO ENSURE THAT PROCEDURE FOR MARKING,
REPORTING, AND RELAYING INFORMATION OF CHEMICAL HAZARDS ARE CLEARLY
UNDERSTOOD AND WORKABLE. THESE OR ALTERNATE TECHNIQUES AND THE
EFFORT REQUIRED TO ENSURE THE SAFETY OF FOLLOW ON FORCES WILL NOT
BE EASILY ACCOMPLISHED. HOWEVER, THEY WILL SAVE LIVES.
  5. POC FOR THE CHEMICAL SECTION IS LTC PATE, 9-9977-637.
