            4. (U) TITLE: MATERIAL HANDLING EQUIPMENT

            5. (U) OBSERVATION: Material Handling Ecluipment (MHE)
            authorized by TO&E was inadequate to perform the mission.

            6. (U) DISCUSSION: Units deployed to Saudi Arabia with
            forklifts that were authorized. Upon arrival in country,
            increased mission requirements including mail, sundry packs,
            class IV and movement of ammunition made MHE authorized by MTOE
            inadequate to perform the support mission. maintenance problems
            created by harsh enviroment and old MHE exacerbated the shortage
            of MHE. The division contracted for additional MHE to help
            perform support missions.

            7. (U) LESSON LEARNED: More MHE are required to perform mission
            support requirements within the division especially in the main
            support battalion.

            S. (U) RECOMMENDED ACTION: Change TO&E for main and forward
            support battalions to increase the number of forklifts
            authorized.
