                                     JULS LONG REPORT

            1. (U) @S @ER' 52067-43933 (00011), submitted by SIGNAL
            OFFICER, 24 ID, 870-5516, (912)767-5516.

            2. (U) No type OPN DESERT STORM NOTES conducted by 24 IN DIV (Ln.
            on 05/20/91.

            3. (U) KEYWORDS: GENERATORS, COMMUNICATIONS, SIGNAL, POWER
            GENERATION, .

            4. (U) TITLE: GENERATORS

            S. (U) OBSERVATION: Present 3 and 5 KW gasoline-powered
generators are inadequate and do not provide required
            reliability.

            6. (U) DISCUSSION: The small gasoline powered generators
organic to the battalion were unreliable during desert
operations. Heat problems compounded by the extreme age of the
@ipment resulted in total unreliability. Additionally, MOGAS
powered generators caused fuel problems since most Army
equipment is now runs on diesel fuel.

            7. (U) LESSON LEARNED: Use diesel generators when possible.
Contract for local purchase small diesel generators and use new
            Quiet Reliable Generators.

            S. (U) RECOMMENDED ACTION: Replace all gasoline powered
generators in the army inventory with lighter, more reliable,
            and more rugged diesel-powered systems.

            9. (U) COMMENTS: Diesel generators are the way to go! Also
consider the use of solar powered equipment with battery pickup
systems. The Saudis used solar power exclusively for their
            backbone microwave system.
