                                                                     05/30/91
                                   JULLS LONG REPORT

          1. (U) JULLS NUMBER: 52067-50244 (00012), submitted by SIGNAL
          OFFICER, 24 ID, 870-5516, (912)767-5516.

          2. (U) No type OPN DESERT STORM NOTES conducted by 24 IN DIV (MECH)
          on 05/20/91.

          3. (U) KEYWORDS: MOBILITY, COMMUNICATIONS, SIGNAL, FIVE TON TRUCK,
          2 1/2 TON TRUCK, .

          4. (U) TITLE: MOBILITY FOR COMMUNICATIONS EQUIPMENT

          5. (U) OBSERVATION: Five ton and 2 1/2 ton fleet inadequate for
          mobility in the desert.

          6. (U) DISCUSSION: The heavy signal shelters mounted on present
five ton and 2 1/2 ton vehicles severly degrade their
trafficability. These vehicles have mobility problems in loose
sand when empty and are incapable of heavy loads and pulling
          heavy generatortrailers.

          7. (U) LESSON LEARNED: HEMTT-type vehicles are preferred for
rugged desert terrain. These vehicles can have signal shelters
and generator trailers mounted in their bed. And they have
,limited recovery capability with their organic crane.

          S. (U) RECOMMENDED ACTION: Replace present vehicles in the
signal battalion with HEMTT for heavy signal shelter
applications and HMMWV for lighter applications.

          9. (U) COMMENTS: Saudis, Iraqis, etc. recognize that trailers
are impractical because they limit mobility. Larger vehicles
with oversize tires perform the best in desert terrain.

              (U) SUBJECT: COMMUNICATIONS

              (U) INTEROPERABILITY: MATERIEL
