                                                                        05/3-,
                                    JULLS LONG REPORT

            1. (U) JULLS NUMBER: 52058-30423 (00006), submitted by DIV
            CHEMICAL, 24 ID, 870-5516, (912)767-5516.

            2. (U) No type OPN DESERT STORM NOTES conducted by 24 IN DIV (I
            on 05/20/91.

            3. (U) KEYWORDS: CHEMICAL, NBC, UNMASKING,

            4. (U) TITLE: UNMASKING PROCEDURES

            5. (U) OBSERVATION: Unmasking procedures inadequate.

            6. (U) DISCUSSION: The current unmasking procedures are
inadequate to support fast moving offensive operations,
            especially for front-line combat units.

            7. (U) LESSON LEARNED: FM 3-4 (NBC Protection) should include
abbreviated unmasking procedures to reduce the time requirements
            to complete this task.

            S. (U) RECOMMENDED ACTION: The US Army Chemical School
(USACMLS) should incorporate abbreviated unmasking procedures
into FM 3-4 (NBC Protection). These procedures should spell out
additional risks involved so commanders can make decisions which
weigh risk-taking versus speed of completion.

            9. (U) COMMENTS: The division chemical section published a
version of abbreviated unmasking procedures (see attached)
during OP @ TION DESERT SHIELD, but technical information on
additional risks to soldiers is required. we will forward a
copy of this AAR comment (along with our propose abbreviated
unmasking procedures) to the USACMLS for their review.

                (U) SUBJECT: OPERATIONS

                (U) INTEROPERABILITY: TRAINING
