                                                                           06/19
                                      OMLS LONG REPORT

            1. (U) OMLS NUMBER: 51551-82725 (00004), submitted by DIVISION
            SURGEON, 24 ID, 870-5516, (912)767-5516.

            2. (U) Other OPN DESERT STORM NOTES conducted by 24 IN DIV (MECH)
            on 03/05/91.

            3. (U) KEYWORDS: FIELD SANITATION, PREVENTIVE MEDICINE,

            4. (U) TITLE: FIELD SANITATION

            5. (U) OBSERVATION: Early in the deployment, one of the most
significant medical issues centered around field sanitation
problems. Examples included adequate toilet and shower
facilities, food inspection, medical surveillance, and water
            analysis.

            6. (U) DISCUSSION: During the early phases of deployment,
soldiers began arriving at the Saudi Arabian ports with only a
limited numb&r of hand washing, shower, and latrine facilities.
This proved inadequate to accomodate the large number of
            soldiers.

Furthermore, the design, contracting arrangements, construction,
and transportation of these facilities was a lengthy process,
delaying their delivery to the field. In addition, the division
does not carry sufficient materiels such as fly bait for an
adequate field sanitation mission. Many of these items were
difficult to locate on the local econemy.
Finally, arrangements for water and food analysis-were delayed
in implementation. All of these factors contributed to or
exacerbated the expected underlying level of diarrhea and other
            health problems.

            7. (U) LESSON LEARNED: Proper and adequate field sanitation is
an integral part of the early phases of a deployment.

            S. (U) RECOMMENDED ACTION:
dicine needs to be deployed as part of the
advance party element to establish and arrange for ad @ ate
water supplies, field sanitation supplies, and sites.

            b) The full complement of field sanitation supplies should be
            available within the division.
