                                   JULLS LONG REPORT

          1. (U) JULLS NUMBER: 50851-32194 (00001), submitted by AVN BDE, 24
          ID, 870-5516, (912)767-5516.

          2. (U) other OPN DESERT STORM NOTES conducted by 24 IN DIV (MECH)
          on 03/05/91.

          3. (U) KEYWORDS: JOINT OPERATIONS, COMMUNICATIONS, LONG RANGE
          RECONNAISSANCE, RECONNAISSANCE, .

          4. (U) TITLE: COMMUNICATIONS WITH THE AIR FORCE

          5. (U) OBSERVATION: During long range aerial reconnaissance
missions, communications was a major concern.

          6. (U) DISCUSSION: Initial operations conducted by the attack
helicopter battalion required elements to cross up to 140 km
behind enemy lines to conduct reconnaissance. The major concern
of these operations was our inability to communicate with these
long range missions. The use of A-10's to provide both security
and a communications link was invaluable.

          7. (U) LESSON LEARNED: During our initial cross FLOT missions,
the teamwork between the A-10's and AH-64 flight was exceptional
and did much to bolster the confidence of our aircrews.

          8. (U) RECOMMENDED ACTION: CAS assets should be included in all
cross FLOT missions for both their security and communications
relay ability. CAS aircraft must have the same graphics to
understand our checkpoints and mission. These control measures
can be abbreviated and briefed by the ALO in flight, as they
were for our reconnaissance missions. Additionally, we must
purchase a radio system that can communicate at great distances.
HF packages already installed in some of the brigade UH-60's
would be appropriate if unable to equip AH-64's.
