       d. Mobility/Countermobility/Survivability. For this operation new
mobility equipment was introduced to both the engineer battalion and the
brigade. Nine M-9 Armored Combat Earthmovers (ACE's) were given to 23rd
EN. Although the ACE's were not as effective in digging as D-7's, their
ability,to mainf-ain movement with the maneuver elements proved
invaluable. The majority of the AVLB's were converted to Armored Vehicle
Launched MICLICs (AVLM's) and Armored Vehicle Launched Spares (AVLS's).
In TAA Henry it was found a modification to the arming wires in the
MICLIC's eliminated the problem of some charges not being able to detonate
after being -Fired. The AVLS's traveled with the re-arm, re-fuel, re-+it
(R3) support element of the Brigade. They proved to be a significant
contribution to the R3 element by providing increased tow capability. The
were often used to pull wheeled vehicles that bagged down in the sand.
No minefields were encountered that required the use of this equipment.
No significant obstacles were encountered during the movement to
contact and attack through the Republican Guards. Upon announcement of
the cease fire the Brigade found itself in an area infested with hundred
of abandoned vehicles. Engineers and maneuver elements worked feverishly
to destroy this equipment. Approximately a week after the cease fire the
Brigade was sent to relieve the Ist CAV Division and assume the mission of
controlling movements on Highway 8 in addition to patrolling the
demarkation line in the vicinity a+ Al Basrah. A theater level Iraqi
munitions depot existed in this area. EOD experts where brought in to
help in the destruction of as much munitions as possible within the
constraints of safety and time. The EOD teams estimated that the depot
consisted of between 200 and 300 thousand tons of munitions. Engineers
ily destruction of Iraqi munitions.
