                                                 SYNOPSIS   OF THE BATTLE





             Task    Force 4-8 Cavalry as the Advance Guard of the 2nd Brigade of the

        3rd Armor Division is conducting a movement to contact some 200                       kilometers

        inside the hostile country of Iraq.                Their   mission: to locate and destroy

        elements of the Republican Guards. The                     task force is travelling in a

        diamond formation with three MlAl                  Heavy   Armor Tank Companies providing

        forward,     left and righ@ security              +or the   task force. A Bradley Company

        provides rear security and acts                  as 'the task force reserve. Within the

        diamond is a dedicated howitzer battery and an engineer company. Outside

        the diamond, six scout Bradley MSs screen forward of the task force to

        provide early warning. To the rear trails the combat trains, designed to

        provide mission essential. combat service support to the task force-

        particular-ly fuel and medical support.

             For two days the task force attacks with no enemy contact, save a few

        wandering EPWS. Late in the afternoon on the third day (26FEB) the Scout

        Platoon     makes its first contact with two armored vehicles. A tank plaicon

        comes                       destroys the vehicles. The task force prepares to take
