        emporary cease to indirect.

Continuing east, SSG Abbott's section detects 4 hotspots (later

dentified as BMPS) to his front. At this time the enemy decides-to react.

t 1727 air burst artillery/mortar rounds explode all around the scouts

and RPG and 73mm (BMP) fire erupts from the east. Six to eight rounds

impact between, in front of, and behind ILT Wynne and SFC Zeitlemayer's

Bradleys as they request and receive permission to withdraw.

As the scouts withdraw, ILT Wynne's turret traverse motor, overheated

from constant scanning and stabilization, gives out. As his vehicle turns

to withdraw lLT Wynne finds his 25mm pointed at C Company. With haste he
turns his M3 back towards the enemy while his gunner, SBT Cortez, manually

traverses the gun over the back deck. SFC Zeitlemoyer, anxious to be out

of the direct and indirect fire waits patiently for his wingman. As they

withdraw, they see sticks in the ground with cans on top of them-possible

       Traqi TRPs or range markers.

The scouts withdraw west through c Company, still under

mortar/artillery fire. Initially they deploy north of the artillery

battery, and at 1956 they deploy to protect the TOC.

                                                                       .7.
