       MEMORANDUM FOR INFORMATION                             24 APRIL 91


       SUBJECT: Reported Typhoid Case Investigation

       1. Ten possible cases of Typhoid were reported 23 April 91 at the TRS
       South of SAFWAN by the Iraqi doctor In residence. This report was
       forwarded through channels to Corps.

       2. Division Preventive Medicine was alerted and began investigation at
       the TRS 24 April 91 and discovered the following:

                     a.  3AD food and water supplies certified by VetrOl/-,e
                     b.  Refugees still drawing water from local cisterns
                     C.  Refugees continue to defecate indiscriminately
                     d.  Open pit latrines insufficient for population
                     e.  Water supply may be insufficient causing 2.b
                     f.  Dr. Hanson 122msb says diagnosis not solid.
                     g.  MAJ Turner 503d FSB to KKMC for culture media

       3. Cases remain  unconfirmed. Patients are under treatment and should be
       quarantined. Effort to educate refugees about personal habits and disease
       may not be successful, especially concerning drawing unapproved water in
       lieu of waiting in line for 3AD provided water.

       4. 3AD Preventive Med to visit site again tomorrow.
