                                     JULLS LONG REPORT

            1. -CUT JULLS NUMBER: 02625-41320 -[000041, submitted by MAJ WILSON,
            24 SIG, 24TH ID, 764-4103.

            2. -(Ul Operation DESERT SHIELD conducted by 24TH ID -(MI on 07/09/90.
            3.(@ KEYWORDS: COMMUNICATIONS, LOGISTICS, .

            4. -[U]- TITLE: AN/TTC-41A AUTOMATIC SWITCHBOARD, AIR CONDITION
            SYSTEM
S.(@ OBSERVATION: The air conditioning system in the
AN/TTC-41A automatic switchboards is inadequate for hot
            climates.

6(U@ DISCUSSION: The 6,000 BTU air conditioner is mounted on
the rear of the shelter and the coal air vented in the middle of
the shelter along the top of the curbside viall, The areas that
build up most heat are the backsides of the SB-3614A, especially
the KELTECH power supply. Because the SB-3614As are installed
In the forward right corner of the shelter, very little cool air
reaches the back of the SB-3614A. It appears that the
air conditioning system is designed to coal soldiers and not the
critical equipment. We have had several KELTECH power supplies
and SB-3614A cards -[items that are hard to getl become
inoperative due to overheating. The signal platoon from 10th
Mountain Division has AN/TTC-49 automatic swichboards with the
SB-364lAs mounted center forward wall so that the cool air blows
directly on the back of the SB-3614As. This platoon has
            experienced virtually zero overheating problems.
7(@ LESSON LEARNED: AN/TTC-41A users need to improvise
ducting to redirect the cool air flow to the back of the
            SB-3614As.
8@U@ RECOMMENDED ACTION: Reconfigure the AN/TTC-41A so that
ovide a
9,000 BTU air conditioner that Is mounted In the middle of the
forward wall, like the AN/TTC-49, so that the cool air blows
directly onto the back of the SB-36lAs.
