4. SIGNIFICANT ACTIVITIES:
a. A significant activity prior to the reporting period was
a Third Army exercise at Eglin Air Force Base called INTERNAL
LOOK 90. The exercise scenario was An Iraqi invasion of Kuwait
and Saudi Arabia. The exercise dates were 16-29 July 1990.
b. About I August 1990 the Third Army received an indication
of actual movement of Iraqi troops toward the Kuwaiti border. on
2 August i990 Iraq invaded Kuwait. On 6 August, COL Drill, chief
of the Third Army Surgeon's Section at Fort McPherson notified
LTC DeBl6is and MAJ Brown to begin planning health services
support. The Surgeon's Section looked at their TOE and decided to
call the Surgeon Generalls office and FORSCOM to fill the
vacancies in the TOE from Active Component assets. Initially, the
medical assets for the theater were selected from Active
Component units because it was unclear at that time whether
Reserve Troop Program units would be mobilized.
c. MAJ Jerry Brown was the first member of the Surgeon's
Section to deploy to Saudi Arabia. on 21 August 1990, MAJ Steven
M. Astriab arrived in Saudi Arabia to begin on-site coordination
for the use of Host Nation facilities. on 24 August 1990, MAJ
Astriab began coordination with the office of the Project
Manager, Saudi Arabian National Guard (OPM-SANG) for use of SANG
medical facilities. On 28 August COL Tsoulos and COL Holland
arrived in Saudi Arabia and were joined on 29 August by COL
Livermore and LTC DeBlois.

In late September additional staff members

deployed to 2060 as part of what was called the "minimum
essential force package".
I e. Maintenance problems experienced with Medical Unit Self-
contained Transportable (MUST) equipment in the harsh desert
environment led to the Surgeon's staff deciding that only
hospitals equipped with Deployable Medical Systems (DEPMEDS)
equipment would be deployed. Hospitals that had previously
deployed with MUST equipment or tents had DEPMEDS equipment
fielded to them in theater, while hospitals in the United States
were converted to DEPMEDS equipment prior to deployment. DEPMEDS
fielding teams in theater ensured that hospital staffs were able
to use the new equipment properly.
f. During October 1990 the medical force continued to grow
under the command of the 44th Medical Brigade' an XVIII Airborne
Corps unit. In early November the President decided to add the
VII Corps to the theater. In response to this, the Surgeon's
