AR 15-8 Investigation
Investigating Officer: Diehl, James G., Maj, Armor,
S-3, Ist Bn, 84th Ar.
Location: Eastern Saudi, Arabia VIC TL.
Investigating Officer Statement:
On or about 1800 hrs, 5 Dec 90, in the vicinity of 3-69 Ar's assembly
area, an MI Tank (Bumper No. A66) caught fire and burned. The tank
was completely destroyed along with associated equipment, ammunition,
and componets of the tank. The cause of the fire is impossible to
determine with certainty. However, it was apparently caused by a
transmission which was having mechanical difficulty, overheated and
ignited oil or fuel residue in the hull of the tank and electrical
wiring in the power pack. Both fixed fire extinguishers were manually
fired and failed to put out the fire and the efforts of crewmen with
portable fire extinguishers was equally futile. The tank burned 12-14
hours and secondary ammunition explosions destroyed it completely.
