mechanism. Instead of tentage, more 'iso containers could be used
which would provide faster setup and greater protection. Beds and
other equipment could be built into the walls, etc. for use as
needed. Presently, the tents provide little and inadequate
protection against munitions, NBC agents, and even dust from our
experience. Sealed iso containers would provide significantly
greater protection. If electrical generators and air conditioning
units with adequate nuclear, chemical and biological filters were
built into the iso units, there would be much greater personnel
protection and much less set up time for use. It takes
significant time for set up of a DEPMEDS now and is manpower
intensive. To try to clean the tentage if significant NBC
contamination occurred would be prohibitive and probably nearly
impossible. Cleaning of the metal iso containers would be
feasible and probably practical, depending on the nature and
magnitude of the contaminant. Even in our conventional munitions
accident, the tentage was a total loss and parts caught on fire,
and this was accidental.
5. In summary, the DEPMEDS hospital suffered significant damage
in this large munitions accident but primarily to the tentage
areas. The metal iso containers were the least damaged, provided
the best personnel protection and much was salvageable that was
inside them. There is much that could be built into them such as
in many of our self contained motor homes. A hospital made up of
many of these units with good air tight connectors would be more
rapidly set up, provide better personnel protection against
conventional and NBC weapons, and also environmental hazards.
