                                 MISSION STATEMENT

                 (U)     The 9TH Chemical Detachment provides Point
           Biological and stand-Off Chemical detection capability to
           strategic sites throughout the theater of bperatibn to
           provide early warning and confirmation of suspected chemical
           and biological attacks by Iraqi forces



                                    ORGANIZATION


                1.        9TH Chemical Detachment deployed from FT.
           Lewis, WA in two phases. The first group arriving in Saudi
           Arabia on 26 Jan 91 and consisting af 29 personnel. The
           second group arrived on 3 FEB 91 and consisted of 16
           soldiers. 9TH Chemical Detachment was organized into a
           Headquarters section and 12 teams with three soldiers each.
           Seven of the teams specialized in Bioloyical detection only,
           while the remainin4 five teams per ormed chemical and
           biological detectiofi/monitoring. Figure 1-1 depicts the
           organization and manning of the-9TH Cfiemical Detachment upon
           deployment to Saudi Arabia.
                         Prior to the units departure to Saudi Arabia,
           9TH Chemical Detachment began to receive 54B soldiers from
           throughout the 9TH Infantry Division. A total of            19
           additional soldiers were assigned to 9TH Chemical detachment
           bringing the total to 45 soldiers deployed for operation
           Desert Shield/Storm.

                             Between JAN 1990 and MAR 1990 9TH Chemical
           Detach@ent employed 12 teams in CM/BIO missions to the
           following   units CENTCOM, MARCENT,' CENTAF      SOCCOM, and
           ARCENT. Each team remained with their assigned unit until
           the end of hostilities. Due to the late arrival of some of
           the teams, unit cohesion could not be established before the
ams, thus inhibiting the capabilities of the
           teams. There were no personnel turnover during the entire
           operation.
